What is Latisse?

Latisse is the trade name for Bimatoprast, a synthetic compound in the prostaglandin family, which, under the trade name Lumigan, is also used as an eye drop to control the progression of glaucoma. It was noted incidently but fortuitously, that glaucoma patients using the eye drops were seen to grow long, thick and dark eyelashes. On the basis of these finding, clinical trials investigating the use of bimatoprost as a cosmetic drug began. In December 2008, the FDA approved bimatoprost for the cosmetic use of darkening and lengthening eyelashes. Single drops of Latisse are applied nightly, just before bedtime, to the clean surface of the upper eye-lid using a sterile applicator. Eyelash lengthening, thickening and darkening are seen within 45-day period.

How Latisse Works?

The precise mechanism of action for Latisse has not yet been elucidated, however the current research suggests that the growth of eyelashes occurs by increasing the percentage of hairs in the part of the hair-follicle growth-phase known as the anagen phase. It is also believed that Latisse increase the duration of the anagen growth phase. Studies in the clinical trial showed that by 16 weeks 78% of study participants showed significant increase in all three measurements: Length (25% longer), Fullness (106% thicker) and Darkness (18% darker).

What is Microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion, also known as “Microderm”, is a group of related cosmetic procedures in which the superficial layer of dead skin, the stratum corneum, is exfoliated or removed partially or completely by light abrasion. It has also been called a ‘lunchtime peel”, a “power peel”, or a “derma peel” The purpose of the light abrasion is to remove sun-damaged skin, to remove or less the appearance of scars, and or to improve the appearance of areas of pigmentation abnormalities or dark spots. Microdermabrasion can also help improve fine-lines, wrinkles, large pores and even skin tone, leaving it with a soft and radiant glow. It has the fewest side effects of any skin procedure and works well on all skin types and colors. It helps the skin look younger, healthier, and for some people, close to perfect. Microdermabrasion is distinguished from Dermabrasion, a more extensive cosmetic medical procedure, in that Dermabrasion involves a complete abrasion of the skin. Because of the extent of removal of the epidermis, Dermabrasion, which is usually performed with an electric particle ‘sander’ is painful, involves bleeding and requires general anesthesia. The skin is frequently red and raw looking, and may take several weeks to heal. Although the results with Dermabrasion can be good, the procedure does involve a risk of infection and permanent scarring. The pain, downtime, risk of infection or permanent scarring and long time to heal has made Dermabrasion option a non-ideal option. For more extensive skin rejuvenation, most people will opt for the non-invasive laser resurfacing like Pixel, and may use microdermabrasion for an anti-aging maintenance plan.


What is DermaSweep?

DermaSweep is the medical Microdermabrasion system which combines gentle precision brush-tip skin exfoliation with variable vacuum pressure, and the option of infusion of vitamins, cosmeceuticals and botanicals that enrich the skin, making it the most comfortable and efficacious skin treatments available. What is Botox?

Botox is a registered trademark given to Botulinum Toxin A, normally a toxin associated with the condition known as botulism. At lower doses, Botox is a safe and highly-effective treatment for facial wrinkles and lines. Botox has both medicinal and Cosmetic uses, and was first FDA approved in 2002 for the cosmetic use in treating moderate-to-severe glabellar lines (the “11” lines of the inter-brow region) of the face. How Botox Works

As skin ages, changes in the elasticity and thickness occur which lead to development of lines. Some lines are the result of dynamic muscle contraction over time.

Botox works by reducing the contraction of muscles that cause persistent frown lines, furrows, and wrinkles (rhytids). These can include lines across the forehead, lines between the brows, lines around the outer eyes (crow’s feet), fine lines around the vermilion border of the lip (smoker’s lines), and wrinkles along the neck. Botox injections to these areas of the face and neck can be done in a few minutes, with very small needles and minimal discomfort or pain.

When injected, Botox works by entering nerve cells, and disabling the apparatus inside the nerve cell that is necessary to transmit the electrical signal to the adjacent muscle cell that it controls. When this happens, the muscle cell cannot contract. The wrinkles, furrows and lines cannot be formed. The muscle cell will remain still until branches from the nerve ending re-establish contact with the muscle cell. This process can take about 3-4 months to complete, which is why Botox treatment typically lasts 3-4 months or more.

Another Botulinum Toxin based Cosmetic treatment that is now available in OKC, Dysport (Reloxin). Although available in Europe for many years, Dysport was introduced in the US as a competitor to Botox in 2009. Although there are subtle differences between Botox and Dysport in how quick it works and how long it lasts, in general, it is believed the products are equivalent in activity and in price.

Many women are cursed with an upper lip that is hairy or legs more furry than the average linebacker. Some men get ‘ingrown” hairs, others ear hair or back hair. Only the lucky one’s of us were blessed to have hair exactly in the places we wanted and none in the places we don’t. The majority of us pluck, shave, or trim this hair or use waxing, sugaring to rid ourselves of these nuisances. Few of us realize that there is a relatively new, convenient and simple way to manage the problem of unwanted body hair. The way is Laser Hair Removal. Here is how it works.

A laser is a highly focused and filtered energetic beam of light. The primary principle behind laser hair removal is selective photothermolysis. Lasers can cause localized damage by selectively heating dark target matter, (melanin), in the area that causes hair growth, (the follicle), while not heating the rest of the skin. Light is absorbed by dark objects, so laser energy can be absorbed by dark material in the skin (but with much more speed and intensity). This dark target matter, or chromophore, can be naturally-occurring or artificially introduced.

al lasers currently on the market. Melanin occurs naturally in the skin. It gives skin and hair its color. There are two types of melanin in hair: eumelanin (which gives hair brown or black color) and pheomelanin (which gives hair blonde or red color). Because of the selective absorption of photons of laser light, only black or brown hair can be removed.

Both men and women seek laser hair removal services to have superfluous or unwanted hair removed or reduced. In Oklahoma City Laser Hair removal is commonly done on lip, chin, ear lobe, shoulders, back, underarm, abdomen, buttocks, pubic area, bikini lines, thighs, face, neck, chest, arms, legs, hands, and toes, just as it is in most areas of the US.

Laser works best with dark coarse hair. Light skin and dark hair are an ideal combination, but new lasers are now able to target dark black hair even in patients with dark skin.

Repetition rate is believed to have a cumulative effect, based on the concept of thermal relaxation time. Shooting two or three pulses at the same target with a specific delay between pulses can cause a slight improvement in the heating of an area. This may increase the "kill rate" for each treatment slightly.

Is Laser Hair Removal Painful?

One criticism of Methods of Laser hair removal has been discomfort. Epidermal cooling or skin cooling using a refrigerant or cooling agent to the skin immediately before the laser pulse to the skin has been determined to allow higher energy transfer and reduce pain and side effects, especially in darker skin. So, a particulary uncomfortable process is made very comfortable by the inclusion of this comfort feature by the GentleLASE system.

How many Treatments are needed ?

Multiple treatments, usually 6-8, but as much as 12 depending on the type of hair you have and skin color have been shown in numerous studies to provide long-term reduction of hair. Current parameters suggest a series of treatments spaced at 4-6 weeks apart for most areas, although the timing of treatments has still not been standardized. The number of sessions depends on various parameters, including the area of the body treated, skin color, coarseness of hair, and gender. In addition, since hair grows in several phases, (anagen, telogen, catagen), and laser can only affect the currently actively growing follicles, (anagen), several sessions are needed to kill hair in all phases of growth.

In general, it is necessary to undergo between 6 - 8 treatment sessions. Coarse dark hair on light skin is easiest to treat. Finer hair and hair on darker skin is harder to treat and may require more treatments. Certain areas (notably men's and women's faces) may require considerably more treatments to achieve desired results.

It's important to note that laser does not work on light hair and very fine and vellus hair ("peachfuzz"). In OKC Electrolysis is the only permanent solution for those types of hair but has shortcomings such as possible scarring, expense, and discomfort.
