Spider Veins: A "Cosmetic" Scarlet Letter

No one ever lost a job opportunity because of them. And no one has ever been made the 'pariah' of their community because of them. But, you would certainly think so, considering the number of people who "bear" them, and desperately want to get rid of them.

What are Spider Veins?

Telangiectasias, or more commonly known as spider veins, are small, dilated blood vessels found near the surface of skin or mucous membranes. Although it is far from a cosmetic "badge of shame" or the proverbial "Scarlet letter", spider veins are a problem for millions of men and women worldwide, and it is estimated that 60% of the population suffers from spider veins or varicose veins. You don't have to do anything 'wrong" to get them. 40% of women age 40 to 50 have them. And 72% of women over 60 have them.

Anatomically, they measure between 0.5 and 1 millimeter in diameter, and are found virtually anywhere on the body. They come to the attention of the medical aesthetics specialist most often when they occur on the face, around the nose and cheek or on the thighs or legs. Although there are genetic and hereditary causes of telangiectasias, the most common encountered causes are the acquired forms. Acquired telangiectasias include those caused by venous hypertension (elevated blood pressure in the veins) with associated varicose veins (enlarged veins), pregnancy wherein circulating hormones that weaken vessel walls are produced, and occupations that involved prolonged sitting or standing. There is also a role of excessive sun exposure and environmental insults that promote their presence.

Is there a Cure?

Most people think that there is no cure or treatment for spider veins. There is, and it is simple. Painful injections with sclerotherapy agents to coagulate veins are no longer necessary for spider veins. New, "light-based" therapies are allowing physicians to successfully treat these "unsightly veins", simply, with minimal discomfort, non-invasively and safely.

The treatment of choice these days for spider veins which meet the criteria of ease, comfort, simplicity and safety is the Long-Pulse 1064 Nd:YAG laser. The wavelength of the device is specific for targeting the "red" color in the Hemoglobin (the oxygen transport molecule of the blood cell). The surrounding area of skin and soft tissue is not selected by the laser, leaving it intact. The collision of the hemoglobin with the energy packet of the laser induces an abrupt heat reaction which leads to coagulation of the blood vessel. The vessel area is usually bleached immediately. The coagulated fragments of the vessel are then gradually dissolved and resorbed by the body.

In Oklahoma City, Spider vein removal remains an "in-demand" procedure. However, many people with this problem are unaware that it can be treated so simply. Prices range from a few hundreds of dollars to a thousand on average, but obviously depend on the number of veins, their size, how extensive they are, and the number of times treatments the area requires. She's been called "the HOTTEST Woman in OKC Media" by the Oklahoma City Blog "The Lost Ogle". We would have to agree although we would have to add our client Jaime Cerreta of FOX to that title. The upcoming episode of the HOT405 Saga will feature the real-life Liz Dueweke of the FOX25 Morning News Show and TheSpyFM.com Radio, as the new 'HOUSEWIFE' on the block. Liz join the cadre of other Oklahoma City Celebrities who have stareed in the "HOT405" series including Wayne Coyne of the Recording Group "Flaming Lips" and Fashion Designer Johnathan Kayne.

Eat Smarter than ME!:
Potato Leek Soup with fresh Bacon and Dill

Potato leek soup truly satisfies and nourishes on those rainy, cold and wet days of autumn and winter. Salty, smoky bacon from pasture-raised hogs pairs beautifully with the soft flavors of leek, celery and potato while the vibrant addition of fresh dill brings the flavors together.

Ingredients

4 ounces pasture-raised bacon, fried and crumbled with fat reserved

4 leeks, rinsed well with white and light green parts sliced very thinly

1 pound waxy potatoes, scrubbed well and cubed

1 quart fresh chicken broth

2 bay leaves, preferably fresh though dried will do

2 cups fresh whole milk

1 bunch fresh dill, chopped fine

Unrefined sea salt and freshly ground white pepper, to taste

Cream fresche or sour cream, to serve

Instructions

In a heavy-bottomed soup pot, heat reserved bacon fat over a medium flame until melted and sizzling.

Add the thinly sliced leeks to the melted bacon fat and fry until they begin to soften and release their aroma, about five to six minutes or so.

Add one quart fresh chicken broth to the leeks and dump in the cubed potatoes and cover the pot.

Cook the potatoes, leeks and broth together over a medium-low flame until the potatoes are softened and tenderly fall apart when pressed with the tines of a fork, about thirty minutes.

Remove the soup from the flame and allow it to cool slightly, and then pour two cups fresh whole milk into the soup pot, stirring in the fresh dill as you go.

Season the mixture with unrefined sea salt and white pepper as it suits you, then serve the soup with plenty of crumbled bacon and a dollop of cream fresche or sour cream.

The Judges Have Spoken!

The Housewives of the 405 and their Creators were in Bricktown this weekend attending the Oklahoma City ADDY Awards.   The ADDY awards are given by the American Advertising Federation (AAF) /OKC AD Club for Excellence in Advertising, analogous to what the Emmy's are to the Television Industry. Members from virtually all of the major advertising agencies in town were in attendance including the "Goliath of Advertising" Ackerman-McQueen, Staplegun Design, VI Marketing, Insight Creative Group, & Jordan Associates, as well as non-ad agency entities with in-house creative departments like Braums and The Chicasaw Nation.

And let's not forget ROBOT HOUSE CREATIVE, the design firm behind BodyTrends' Housewives of the 405. This was a Big Night for Brian Winkeler, Robot House's Creative Director. When all was said and done, Robot had captured a GOLD ADDY, the highest Award given in a category, and 2 SILVER ADDY's for "Housewives.   Brian Winkeler and Robot House came away with about 13 ADDY's including the Coveted BEST OF SHOW-HUMOR ADDY called the FONTANA Award...his 4th Fontana. The Gold ADDY automatically forwards the submission to District Competition.    We are optimistic that the DISTRICT AAF Judges will be impressed with HOUSEWIVES as well.

Dr. Jenkins of BodyTrends who was also in attendance remarks about the phone call he made to Winkeler about 8 months ago, after seeing his work for the DeadCenter Festival. "I discussed the idea of The Housewives format applied to OKC" Jenkins said, "and using humor, geography, as a branding tool to connect with our target market. Instead of laughing at the idea, he saw the vision immediately, as well as the infinite possibilities and ran with it. Within 3 weeks, I had in my hands the first episode of "Housewives"" The art was provided by Robert Wilson IV and the color by Jordan Boyd. "We both knew we had a winner!"

Then came the celebrity appearances by Wayne Coyne of the Flaming Lips and Jonathan Kayne, the effect of which greatly improved the Housewives visibility.

Upcoming episodes of the HOT405 Saga will feature the real life Liz Dueweke of the FOX25 Morning News Show, as the new 'HOUSEWIFE' on the block. The FOX25 Morning Show Viewers will get to Vote on what the plot involving Liz's character will be. SO Watch FOX25. The Artistic rendering of Liz'z character is being done as we speak.

Spider Veins: A "Cosmetic" Scarlet Letter

What are Spider Veins?

Telangiectasias, or more commonly known as spider veins, are small, dilated blood vessels found near the surface of skin or mucous membranes. Although it is far from a cosmetic "badge of shame" or the proverbial "Scarlet letter", spider veins are a problem for millions of men and women worldwide, and it is estimate that 60% of the population suffers from spider veins or varicose veins. You don't have to do anything 'wrong" to get them. 40% of women age 40 to 50 have them. And 72% of women over 60 have them.

Anatomically, they measure between 0.5 and 1 millimeter in diameter, and are found virtually anywhere on the body. They come to the attention of the medical aesthetics specialist most often when they occur on the face, around the nose and cheek or on the thighs or legs. Although there are genetic and hereditary causes of telangiectasias, the most common encountered causes are the acquired forms. Acquired telangiectasias include those caused by venous hypertension (elevated blood pressure in the veins) with associated varicose veins (enlarged veins), pregnancy wherein circulating hormones that weaken vessel walls are produced, and occupations that involved prolonged sitting or standing. There is also a role of excessive sun exposure and environmental insults that promote their presence.

Is there a Cure?

Most people think that there is no cure or treatment for spider veins. There is, and it is simple. Painful injections with sclerotherapy agents to coagulate veins are no longer necessary for spider veins. New, "light-based" therapies are allowing physicians to successfully treat these "unsightly veins", simply, with minimal discomfort, non-invasively and safely.

The treatment of choice these days for spider veins which meet the criteria of ease, comfort, simplicity and safety is the Long-Pulse 1064 Nd:YAG laser. The wavelength of the device is specific for targeting the "red" color in the Hemoglobin (the oxygen transport molecule

of the blood cell). The surrounding area of skin and soft tissue is not selected by the laser, leaving it intact. The collision of the hemoglobin with the energy packet of the laser induces an abrupt heat reaction which leads to coagulation of the blood vessel. The vessel area is usually bleached immediately. The coagulated fragments of the vessel are then gradually dissolved and resorbed by the body.

In Oklahoma City, Spider vein removal remains an "in-demand" procedure. However, many people with this problem are unaware that it can be treated so simply. Prices range from a few hundreds of dollars to a thousand on average, but obviously depend on the number of veins, their size, how extensive they are, and the number of times treatments the area requires. HOT!!!

Morgan Woolard, the previous Miss Oklahoma USA, left some really big shoes to fill.... or should we say "pumps". As you may remember, a few months ago, this stunning Oklahoma beauty and BodyTrends Client became a national obsession as she answered a very controversial question onstage at the Miss USA pageant. The answer she gave to the question, it is felt, cost her the crown. But still, America was very impressed with the blonde, Catherine Deneuve re-incarnate from Southside OKC. A national Television Blitz followed with appearances on Letterman, Larry King, Fox & Friends, as well the photoshoots for Tony Bowls and Hallmark. She has 3 Facebook Pages and has many other tribute pages set up by Fans of her. What a tough act to follow.

Enter Kaitlyn Smith, a local model for the Anthony David Modeling Agency and pre-med student at the University of Oklahoma in Norman, OK. This former Lake Havasu High School Beauty, although unquestionably beautiful, was an unlikely pageant winner. Why? Unlike most of the competitors at the Miss Oklahoma USA pageant held at the Masonic Temple in Guthrie, OK on November 28, 2010, she had never been in a pageant before, ever.

After a preliminary night of competition, it was clear Kaitlyn Smith was not a novice. She had what it took. Kaitlyn and 4 other BodyTrends clients survived the first cut leading to the Top 15. They included Tailor Cook, Michelle Bruffett (last year's 1st Runner-up), Michelle McCoy, and Kelsie Guthrie.

Was it the beautiful face, the Sculpted physique perfected at BodyTrends and by BodyTrends trainer Joey Codner, the metallic leopard skin evening gown, the "walk" or the command and articulation in which she answered her interview question. We will never know for sure, but in the final moments of the pageant, with just 2 women left on stage, the audience was about to find out that you don't need previous experience in a pageant to become a champion. Applause like thunderclaps filled the auditorium as the successor to Morgan Woolard was crowned, and the biggest shoes in the USA were filled. Kaitlyn Smith, Miss Norman North, was crowned Miss Oklahoma USA 2011.

In attendance in Guthrie were BodyTrends owners, Harvey Jenkins, MD and Tashonda Dixon, Manager Stacey Neuhauser and several members of the BodyTrends staff who treated and attended Kaitlyn Smith. According to Dr. Jenkins, "This is a very satisfying moment for BodyTrends, with Kaitlyn Smith being our 3rd client to win Miss Oklahoma USA. We are so grateful to Heather Rouba, who is a former Mrs. Oklahoma for bringing this exceptionally beautiful woman to our attention. We look forward to helping Kaitlyn as she prepares for Miss USA. Just like Morgan, we think that with her beauty and countenance, she can go all the way."

Tashonda Dixon was equally excited about Kaitlyn's victory. She noted that "like all 10 of our clients competing, Kaitlyn worked so hard. You could tell that she was committed and determined." She also added that "Tonite was an important night for BodyTrends. With our 10 client competitors, virtually all of our Bodysculpting Services and Facial technology was represented on stage. Over 250 people joined the staff and owners of BodyTrends, as the Spa was transformed into enchanted evening in medieval Venice. The Celebration held on September 10th paid homage to the beauty, pageantry, mystery, sensuality and allure of Venetian Masquerade.

A final 'thank you' to our "Model" (pictured above)who graciously lent his likeness and physique to this project. The photo-shoot, which took place about 3 weeks before the party, was Magical. The images generated were edgy, sexy, compelling and captivating. Little to no photo-editing of the images was necessary. The images were RAW. They got attention, and that was the goal. Not bad, for a first-time model. His only request of us was not to highlight his identity. He is a Businessman who oversees about 40 people, he has an MBA, he coaches a high-school football team on the side. He didn't think the "folks at work" would understand. And if the 'kids on the team" got a hold of the photos, they'd be plastered all around the gym.....he'd never hear the end of it. Begrudgingly, we have complied with his request, so long as he helps us with our next project.

SENSA: Your Weight Loss Solution May be Right Under your Nose!

Sensa: Common "Scents" Approach to Weight Loss

You need to fit into that sleek, partially-revealing swimsuit by next summer. You want people to stare, to sigh, and to melt when they see you. The only problem is that you are about 20lbs over what you need to get that reaction. Instead of people melting at the sight of you, they react by pitying you.

There are literally hundreds of options for losing weight. For larger amounts of weight, the hCG Diet may be the best option for rapid results. For a slower, the best option may be an appetite suppression medication like Phentermine (Adipex-P) or a fat-blocker like Alli. Diet programs like Weight Watchers and Jenny Craig emphasize the role of support in weight loss along with eating correctly and sensibly. Others still find success with Calorie Restriction, which only works well if not undermined by a lack of will power. But for many people who are overweight, and have tried and failed just about every diet plan known to man, there are few remaining options. Clearly for those people, there is a need for a simple, "common sense" approach to weight loss, where the body actually helps in the process rather than hinders.

He reasoned if losing the sense of smell or taste resulted in gaining weight, then perhaps giving a normal person "extra smell" could lead to losing weight. He proposed that the "extra smell" would stimulate receptor molecules in the Olfactory bulb inside the nose. The receptor binding process in the bulbs would then act to stimulate an area of the brain known as the satiety center. The result of this stimulation would be to give the body a sense of fullness or satiety, and extinguishing any desire to eat further.

Biochemists in Dr. Hirsch's laboratory isolated and purified Salt-like, crystalline compounds, called "tastants", which were capable of stimulating the olfactory bulb in the nasal passages to produce the satiety response. The tastants he produced are virtually tasteless and odorless, but are capable of mimicking the chemical responses we produce in response to smells and tastes. The compounds were then given to test subjects who sprinkled them on food like "salt" at the beginning of every meal. The 1436 people who participated in this study lost on average 30.5 lbs in the 6-month period.

The advantages of Sensa weight loss lies in the fact it is not a traditional "diet". There is no reliance on food restriction or calorie-restriction. One can theoretically eat anything at all, including favorite foods. So, unlike the popular Weight Watchers and Nutrisystems diet plans, there are no pre-packaged meals to buy. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Regional Food Bank's Food for Kids program. Kayne hopes to provideFood for Kids backpacks to 150 chronically hungry elementary school children.
Food for Kids provides chronically hungry elementary school children with backpacks filled with non-perishable, kid-friendly food to eat over weekends and holidays. Food for Kids serves 305 elementary schools in 42 counties across central and western Oklahoma, providing backpacks to nearly 8,000 chronically hungry children each week during the school year. There are 25 schools on the waiting list to join the program.

Is QNexa the New Phen-Fen?

QNexa, the New Phen-Fen

Many people still remember the wonder-drug Fen-phen. It was the top-selling weight loss medication used widely in the 1980's and early 1990's. The medication was a combination of two drugs: Fenfluramine, a "psycho-active" agent working to provide the sense of fullness, like some antidepressant medications do and Phentermine, an appetite suppressant ,fat-burner and stimulator of metabolism. Although many people battling obesity found the drug to be highly-effective in weight loss, a significant number of people developed an otherwise rare, but potentially fatal, condition known as pulmonary hypertension and heart valve disease. In 1996, a 30-year-old Boston woman developed heart problems after using Fen-Phen for one month. She died in February on 1997 and her story was featured on Page 1 of the Boston Globe. FDA reports of similar stories and studies affirming a relation between Fen-phen and heart valve/ lung disorders led to its withdrawal from the US Market in September on 1997/ Wyeth, the pharmaceutical company, set aside upwards of 20 Billion dollars to settle the 50,000 or more legal claims associated with the use of Fen-Phen. A tragic and expensive lesson was learned.

Despite the tragic story of Fen-Phen, Obesity remains the single, most-modifiable risk factor contributing to disease and mortality in the United States. The need for effective weight loss medications to combat obesity still remains. Fortunately, the science of weight loss continues to evolve, leading to better and safer options for the treatment of obesity. Recently the FDA has reviewed a new option for weight loss, a medication called QNexa, believed to rival the effectiveness of Fen-Phen without the rare complications of pulmonary and heart disease.

QNexa is a once-a-day medication that is the combination of 2 drugs: Phentermine, the same fat burner in Fen-Phen (not implicated in the heart valvedisorder) and Topiramate ( a drug replacing the Fenfluramine (the agent responsible of the heart lung problems). As you may know, Phentermine (aka 'Adipex') was not 'pulled' from the market and continues to be used as a weigh-loss medicine today. Topiramate is the generic name for Topamax, a medicine commonly used in Migraine and seizure treatment. Physicians quite commonly observe their patients reporting a feeling of fullness and satiety and even weight loss while on Topamax. As with Fen-Phen, the combination of the two medications works synergistically to allow large amounts of weight loss in a reasonable period of time.

Clinical Trials show that roughly 60 to 70 % of people taking QNexa once-daily lost at least 5% of their body weight in 6 months. With higher dose of QNexa, the more weight lost. Only 15% of people lost at least 5 % of their body weight with the placebo.

On July 16^th , QNexa underwent initial FDA review for safety and efficacy. The screening panel DID NOT recommend approval, citing insufficient information confirming the safety of Qnexa in terms of risks to the heart. It should be noted that there were no compelling safety issues involving QNexa in the study compared to other FDA approved medications currently on the market, including Phentermine and Topamax. Final consideration of Qnexa by the FDA may come later this year.

Who knows? QNexa may be the Next Fen-Phen.

The Leigh Thompson Photography Studio Officially opened last week. It's first client was none-other than Jane Jayroe, former Secretary of Tourism and Recreation for the State of Oklahoma, Miss America 1967, News Anchor (KOCO, KFOR) and Inductee into the Oklahoma Hall of Fame.

After Styling with Image Consultant /Stylist, Mr. Larry Chowning of BodyTrends Salon, Ms. Jayroe was whisked into the Studio for her Photoshoot and for some Leigh Thompson magic. Some amazingly beautiful images were captured.

Mr. Thompson is the Official Portrait Photographer of the Miss Oklahoma Pageant. He will photograph the current Miss Oklahoma, BodyTrends Client Emoly West for review by the Miss America judges. We are honored to have Leigh at The New Bodytrends Spa Salon & Studio.
